When it comes to motivation, many of us have it, but there are some of us that do not. Let’s explore exactly what motivation is. Motivation is a strength that induces us to take action on things that we want to succeed or accomplish. For every situation there is a different motivator that may cause us to take action and accomplish a goal or succeed in an endeavor.

Generally, there are six types of motivation fit for six different situations that people experience, they are: Incentive, Fear, Achievement, Growth, Power and Social. Incentive motivation is a form of motivation in which you are seeking a reward. Fear motivation, is a type of motivation that is associated with consequences. Achievement is a type of motivation in which you become determined to be as competent as you can. Growth motivation deters you from becoming comfortable and being stagnant in life, but allows you to always look for ways to change internally and externally to better yourself and your situation.  Power, is a type of motivation in which one desire to control more aspects of their own lives as well as other peoples lives. Finally, social motivation is a type of motivation that a person gains when they feel the need to be accepted by others, generally a specific group. Now that we know a little bit about the six types of motivation, let’s look at the key to keeping your team ambitious and successful.

Motivation is a key factor to being a successful salesmen or women and building a successful sales team. The motivations that most sales teams possess are incentive and achievement, but those motivations often disappear throughout ones career if a person is not reaching his or her goals. A salesperson needs something else.  As the head of the sales department you want to find ways to keep your team engage, determined, ambitious and successful too. The key to keeping your team ambitious and successful, is to encourage them constantly and consistently; if you find that hard to do because some people are simply not motivated, setting up quarterly seminars and having a motivational speaker come and talk to them is a great first step to keeping them ambitious and successful. As a leader, the key to keeping your team ambitious and successful will be to be a leader with integrity, this will automatically motivate your team because they will get that sense of belonging, trust, and pride while working with your organization. Another key to building a ambitious and successful team is to make sure you are an excellent communicator, and especially a great listener. With good communication skills you will possess the motivational power to influence others. By showing your organization that you care, whether it’s through a mentorship program, encouraging them, or allowing them to be a partner in the organization, your organization/company will not fall short of success.

Learn to Take Breaks

You don’t want to walk away from a project and never return, but you also don’t want to force yourself to deal with the same situation for hours on end. When you feel you can’t take any more frustration and that you’re at your wits end, the best thing you can do is take a break.  Some people find that walking away for just five minutes allows them to changer their attitude. Others find a longer break, and sometimes even starting a new project, is the best solution. Learn what works best for you.

Set Benchmarks

As a society, we’re trained to focus on the long-term goal, the final accomplishment. This can be very detrimental to the motivational process.  No matter where you are in a project, you need to break it into little, manageable steps. By doing this you decrease the chances of getting discouraged at the onset of the project. Each time you meet one of your little goals, you’re going to enjoy a fresh surge of motivation.

Reward Yourself

When you reach one of your goals, no matter how small it might seem, you need to reward your efforts. It’s amazing how motivating a half hour of television, a chapter of a good book, or even a single piece of chocolate can be when you’re struggling to keep yourself motivated.

A keynote speaker and motivational speaker have many things in common, but they also have many differences. A keynote speaker is a person that is brought in to an organization or company to speak on a centralized idea, topic, or a particular theme and deliver content that coincides with the overall message that the company or organization trying to deliver. A keynote speaker is usually brought in to speak to audiences and groups during a meeting, training or in a conference like atmosphere. A keynote speaker is there to talk about the overall company or organization. They are usually there to deliver the company or organization overall philosophy, its identity, and its brand to explain on what their target market want and what they need. Think of known events that we all are aware of in which keynote speakers are used, which are the democratic and republican national conventions.
A motivational speaker is a person that uses more emotional methods to deliver its message to encourage their audience to take action and adapt to change. Motivational speakers are usually there to speak to the people of the company or organization and not so much on the company products and identity. Motivational speakers deliver their presentations with a great deal of enthusiasm and energy to deliver its message. Inspirational speakers are also usually there to get inside the heads of people who are a part of organizations and companies to help with setting their goals, how to stay steadfast when obstacles start to happen, and how to not just be content with the current success that they may have, but to continue to achieve even greater success. In addition, when a motivational speaker is speaking, they frequently incorporate activities into their speaking. Activities that they incorporate when they are speaking are: quizzes, games, dancing, and skits. Although, a keynote speaker and a motivational speaker have different styles of speaking, they still share the common ground of speaking which is usually to encourage and motivate their audiences. Motivation can be considered a psychological state that causes someone to take action toward a desired goal. Motivational Speakers can use this to improve many peoples lives and many aspects of business.

Motivation Definition

Motivation has been shown to have roots in physiological, behavioral, cognitive, and social areas. Motivation may be rooted in a basic impulse to optimize well-being, minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure, or to gain something that your mind or body craves.  Example: To get a group of employees to work together, you may need to motivate each of them individually to see the value in helping the next person out. The motive could be the sense of humility you gain from helping another colleague or that when you help your colleague, more work gets done and which increases productivity, sales and happiness.

There are two different types of Motivation:

  1. 1.    Intrinsic (internal) motivation
  2. 2.    Extrinsic (external) motivation.

 

Intrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that is driven by an interest or enjoyment in the task itself, and exists within the individual rather than relying on external pressures or a desire for reward. People become curious and bored in the absence of reward. Intrinsic motivation is a natural motivational tendency and is a critical element in cognitive, social, and physical development. Organizations that are intrinsically motivated are more likely to engage in any given task willingly as well as work to improve their individual skills, which will increase their capabilitiesand overall productivity.

Teams are likely to be intrinsically motivated if they:

  • Attribute their results to factors that they personally controlled.
  • Believe that they have the ability to complete the task at hand.
  • Are interested in truly mastering a topic, not just getting by.

 

Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation refers to the performance of an activity in order to attain an outcome, whether or not that activity is also intrinsically motivated. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside of the individual. Common extrinsic motivations are rewards (for example money or grades) for showing the desired behavior, and the threat of punishment following misbehavior. Competition is in an extrinsic motivator because it encourages the performer to win and to beat others, not simply to enjoy the intrinsic rewards of the activity. When you set out on a journey to reach your goal, it’s easy to start with all the excitement in the world. Most of us can relate this to January 1st of each year when we set New Years resolutions to have a healthier, more successful life. Make a Commitment to Stay In It Long-term

By looking at the situation as a whole new way of doing life, you are committing to a long-term effort to accomplish your goals. Changing habits is only the initial starting point, but living out those changes long term is going to require some motivation.

Be Sure to Pace Yourself 

Just like a long distance runner should never exit the starting gates at a sprint, you need to pace yourself too if you want to avoid burn out. Instead of expending all of your efforts and energy and to be successful in the first few days or weeks, pace yourself and slow down to a sustainable pace so you can continue on the journey for the long haul.

Remember Why You Started 

If you start to feel yourself slipping into frustration and you sense that you are about to burnout, take a minute to regroup and remember why you started in the first place.
